John Stevens should have been a mortality statistic, after 25 years of a life of alcoholic insanity. As a child he endured the violence and chaos of alcoholism in his family, and he chose to perpetuate those family traditions in his own marriage. But today, thirty-five years later, John lives a life which is rich, vital, and, above all, sober; filled with friends, music, and service to others. The story of his metamorphosis is a compelling saga, a journey from the pit of addiction and degradation to a sane and useful life in recovery.
John offers his story as a testimonial to the transcendent power of faith, trust, and love to utterly transform a man's life. As his tale reveals, this can sometimes begin in a sudden and dramatic way, on a fall walk through the bare trees of a still Minnesota woods.

I Survived the Party-And the Crash
Chapter One
Ignatia Hall
I had been somebody's problem from the moment I walked through the door and sat down to register at Hazleden. It was September 6, 1974. A driver named Bill had picked me up at the Twin Cities Airport and drove me through the farms and wooded countryside of late summer to Center City, Minnesota. I was nervous as a wet cat about the whole business, but Bill knew how to talk to me and calm me down a bit. He even asked me if I needed to stop at a bar. I thought he was testing me, and I said, "Hell no." Later I realized that he was serious: experience had taught him and the rest of the Hazelden staff that if a new admit was going to go into alcohol withdrawal and the DTs, it was better if it happened after he was admitted to the detox ward, and not in the van.
Bill turned off the highway onto the tree-lined gravel driveway leading into the shaded grounds of Hazelden. We drove slowly for a mile. A cluster of low brick buildings came into view, at the edge of a lake. Bill parked in front of an entrance and pointed at the door.
"That's where you go in," he said. "I'll wait here to take you to where you're going after you get admitted."
Inside the door was a small interview room. I told the clerk at the wooden desk my name.
"Ah, yes, John S.," he said, pulling out a paper-clipped bundle of forms. "We are all ready for you. My name is Ron." Ron was in his sixties, and a little chunky. He smiled, and his eyes were bright.
Before he could even get started with the paperwork, I demanded, "What's the shortest time anybody's ever taken to get out of this
