Chapter One

Act I Scene 1

What the Hell! Gandhi's Killer in Heaven?

(A scene of heaven. A shaven-head man with an unusually long tuft enters with a one-string musical instrument, reciting Gandhi's favourite psalm, Vaishnav Jan real devotee of God feels the pain of others." At the far end of the stage, Gandhi seems to be a meek-looking, black capped man about something.

NARAD: (To the audience, under a partially lighted stage) Welcome to heaven. My name is Narad, and that one over there is Gandhi - I am sure you recognize him. The other meek-looking nobody is Godse, assassin of Gandhi. Yes, you heard it right! Don't be scandalized of a sinner in heaven!

(There is a long pause).

The ever-forgiving Gandhi prayed to God that he forgive Godse and bring him to heaven. If not obliged, Gandhi warned God that he might go on fast until death! Imagine his nerve to threaten God. We, all in heaven, froze in fear of God's wrath! Gandhi called it satyagraha—a moral insistence, or a little kid cajoling his grandpa.

Imagine God rebuking Gandhi that in heaven nobody is allowed to die! Gandhi demurs, "What kind of heaven is it where a simple desire to die could not be fulfilled?" Imagine, after a while, how the Lord, acting in His mysterious way, conceded to Gandhi's plea.

(Shaking his head in disbelief) I have never seen anyone with such persuasive power over God. It's amazing! When heavenly residents protested about Godse's presence, God crisply assured them that Gandhi's presence would help in any crisis.

(Whispering to the audience) Before I forget,
