Fourteen-year-old Jean Karona cannot stop running. In the midst of a life and death game of hide-and-seek with her two younger siblings, Vivian and Rory, Jean knows it's up to her to keep them all safe from the demented Trackers who hunt them.

Running
Have you ever felt so tired you could just give up? The better question would probably be: Have you ever felt so tired, so on fire and so desperate but so incapable, that you could just fall to the ground, bite the dust, and not even care? So tired that all your muscles could deflate while your head is screaming for you to move, even as your nerve endings are fried in the fire converging on your body from all the running and lack of oxygen?
Yeah. That'd be the better question.
But I couldn't stop. Damn it all, I couldn't stop running. Life sucks that way. When I want to give up so badly I can taste it, that's when I hear Dad's voice in my head yelling, That's not good enough, Jean! That's not good enough! and then I know I have to keep going. Well, that is, if I have my life on the line. And two other lives.
Other than all that, I felt fine. Perfect.
I heard a broken sob a short way behind me, and I snapped back to awareness. I looked back and grabbed Vivian's hand, pulling her up along beside me as she almost stumbled. The tears flowing down her cheeks were enough to drive me insane. Who the hell chases kids around and makes a five year old cry?
Beside me, Rory seemed able to cope without my hand. He was so rangy, though; all skin and bone, but no muscle. He was only nine, but already he'd learned to run two miles without breaking a sweat. I could practically hear Dad's voice again in my head, beaming with pride. That's my boy.
