Chapter One

I was running for what seemed like forever, running away from the people who called that place an orphanage. I wasn't going to stop. I wasn't going to turn myself back in again. I was really done with that place.

I heard the chants of my fellow orphans yelling behind me.

"Keep running!"

"Don't look back!"

"You deserve to be free!"

Then I heard the screaming from the people who were coming after me.

"Where are you gonna go?"

"Get back here you worthless rat!"

"Zoey get back here now!"

But I wasn't stopping. This was the third time I had run away. The first time I had gotten caught by the police. The second time I came back because I didn't have a place to turn to. But this time I wasn't going back. Three times is the charm, right? I had been beaten, hurt and raped too much to stay in that place.

I ran into a park and hid beneath big bushes. I heard the steps in front of me getting closer so I put my hand over my mouth to stop my heavy breathing.

"Zoey Where are you?" It felt funny to hear my middle name coming from these people. I was sent here when I was about three years old. My mother couldn't take care of me so she left me there. She said she would come back for me but that was fourteen years ago and I knew my life wouldn't be the same. The name I was truly given was Roel Zoey Somers. But the orphanage wanted to change it.
