Chapter One
Beautiful Smile
Sue was lying asleep in the bed; her hands were cold, there were bruises on her arms and hands where needles had been put in, and there were tubes in her nose so she could breathe. She made no movement; she had no expression. The intensity of her spirit was unexplainable.
Sue's husband, Toby, was standing around, deciding who could come and go in her hospital room. He might say he was saddened by her lying there motionless, but his attempt to control the crowd was beyond meaningless.
A nurse came into the room to take Sue to get an MRI. Toby was glad to see that; he said, "There is a pretty nurse coming to see me. Here I am; sit on my lap." He tried to give her a hug, but the nurse refused and looked with disgust at the old pervert.
Another nurse came to help take Sue to the MRI. The two nurses tried to take Sue's bed and turn it around at the same time; Toby was giving them orders on how to turn the bed. Toby followed the nurses and continuously directed them, saying they should do better.
Meanwhile, Sue's younger son, Joe, and his wife, May, with her older son, Dan, and his wife, June, were sharing their thoughts about how their mother was doing; Sue was mother to three children, two sons and an older daughter, along with seven grandchildren (two granddaughters and five grandsons). Sue's illness happened so fast that they did not know how serious it was or what was the matter.
June tried to explain to Joe and May, along with May's son, Otto, that she might live another month, if not another week, or Sue might die any day. As she calmed down, May could not help the tears th
