Reader Review: I wasn't exposed to many new principles in the book, nor was I treated to an in-depth explanation or discussion of any topic. I kind of flipped through the book, and eventually just skipped over most of it because I felt like I knew it already. I am not saying the book is not valuable, but it was just not for me. I think if you have any business background, or even a casual interest in business, this book won't do much for you. Each chapter is about 3-5 paragraphs, which leads very little time for a comprehensive explanation or discussion of anything. In my opinion, this approach was rather frustrating, as there were topics I wanted to know much more about than what he glossed over. I also found it to be long and rather dry, almost like reading a long series of tweets regarding basic business principles. This approach might work for some, but it wasn't for me. Having said that, I am sure this book will help many get a better overall understanding of business as a whole. Not only that, but I have experience with Josh's website and online course material, and found that stuff to be FANTASTIC. His videos are extremely well done and taught me so much. Unfortunately, I don't feel that his smarts and unique thought process came through as well in the book as they do on his site.
Master the fundamentals, hone your business instincts, and save a fortune in tuition.
The consensus is clear: MBA programs are a waste of time and money. Even the elite schools offer outdated assembly-line educations about profit-and-loss statements and PowerPoint presentations. After two years poring over sanitized case studies, students are shuffled off into middle management to find out how business really works.
Josh Kaufman has made a business out of distilling the core principles of business and delivering them quickly and concisely to people at all stages of their careers. His blog has introduced hundreds of thousands of readers to the best business books and most powerful business concepts of all time. In The Personal MBA , he shares the essentials of sales, marketing, negotiation, strategy, and much more.
True leaders aren't made by business schools-they make themselves, seeking out the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to succeed. Read this book and in one week you will learn the principles it takes most people a lifetime to master.
