There are many books on animal symbolism, but turtles have been somewhat neglected. "Turtles in Art, Mythology, and Folklore: From Prehistory to the Modern World. An Introduction" is different, as it covers every continent from prehistory to the modern world (with an emphasis on antiquity), and presents the ways in which man's perspective on turtles has manifested in art, mythology, and folklore. The present book takes nature and history enthusiasts to a fascinating journey through the millennial history of man-turtle interaction. The book focuses on describing man's views on turtles throughout time and on every continent. These views have materialized in art, mythology, and folklore, and reflect the qualities, at times the flaws, that humans have attributed to the shelled reptile, usually in an attempt to explain human behavior, as well as natural and astronomical phenomena. "Turtles in Art, Mythology, and Folklore" presents and analyzes cave paintings, petroglyphs, pottery, ritual objects, as well as stories and myths, all focusing on the turtle. The text is accompanied by approximately 70 black-and-white and color illustrations, both original artwork and reproductions of artifacts relevant to the subject matter. Each chapter opens with a map of the continent in question; the map shows the location of some of the most representative objects the chapter discusses.
