Gayly Complicated is a ten-story anthology on the complicated relationships involved in man loving man. Could anything ever be more complicated for a gay man? Nothing is as complicated as attempting an ongoing sexual relationship of one man with another. The uncertainties and suspicions and jealousies and misunderstandings that arise daily are legion. In this anthology of ten stories, Shabbu, uses, in the main, the back-and-forth, building-section style to set forth an assessment and examination of the complexity of the male-male relationship. The difficulty in committing, accepting, and remaining constant, in an environment that cannot, as yet, find legal foundation almost anywhere, are presented for the reader, sometimes in frustrating, ships-passing-in-the-night fashion and more times than not in bittersweet sadness for opportunities lost, intentions misunderstood, loyalty sorely tested. But in these stories, there also are messages of love redeemed and commitment made and honored. Extract: When we came back up the lawn from the lake, I instinctively turned toward the cottage when Terry did, although we hadn’t spoken more than a couple of words with each other, and that had been on the drive when he told me what he had to do with the ashes. Tears were streaming down Terry’s face when we entered the cottage, and I just guided him back to the bedroom and we sat there together on the edge of the bed. At first it was just a comradely hug, a shared grieving for the tragedy of Luke’s life. But, without realizing it, I found myself trying to kiss away the tears in Terry’s eyes.
