Finalist in the national Focus writing competition, "O Moon" by Chandra Jayne Copyright 2011 is an award-winning biography based on research of more than 100 books about Pound's life. Also winner of the Graduate Drama Award, "O Moon" is a dazzling portrait of the flamboyant and outspoken American poet Ezra Pound's life in Italy. Set in Rome in 1941, Pound was stalked by the U.S. War Department for treason. His crime: Freedom of speech. American expatriate and poet Ezra Pound rides high on a wave of infamy for his broadcasts on the Fascist-controlled Rome Radio. Pound savors his Fascist friends' adulation and his newfound status as a crusader for peace. The handsome poet believes he is above the law in his attack on the Allies for their "War against Youth." Decidedly non-Fascist, Pound's compassionate speeches about sparing the lives of young men overflow with brilliant fragments, vast illogic, and scurrilous wit. Posturing in the signature black cape and gold earring, Pound stands at the microphone blasting the leaders of the U.S. and Great Britain. In an exaggerated West Texas drawl, one of his many radio accents, Pound personally harangues Roosevelt and Churchill with: "WAR??? Of course you want war! You want all the young girls for yourselves!" Avid promoter and confidante of a multitude of artists and politicians, Pound is unwilling to confer the same kindness upon his family and his mistress. Fun-loving and rapaciously quick in public, Pound's vitality turns to vinegar at home. His English wife Dorothy and their overshadowed son Omar are the first to detect the tiny seed of insanity in Pound's manner.
