Welcome to Wowserland! Historically, more films were banned in Australia than anywhere else in the Western World. Such acclaimed international filmmakers as James Whale, Alfred Hitchcock, Luis Bunuel, Jim Jarmusch, Nagisa Oshima, Tinto Brass, Catherine Breillat, and Larry Clark have all had their works banned in Australia at one time. Hundreds more - without official record-keeping - were censored prior to release in the country, usually lest they offend against Christian moral propriety. Australia in the C21st is the most censorial of any so-called democracy. Poised to introduce a mandatory Internet filtering system it made illegal screen depictions of sex acts that were legal to perform with consensual adults and outlawed all screen depictions of sexual fetish. In a society with no Bill of Rights nor free speech protection, Christian morals groups controlled the film censorship apparatus, determined to prohibit any and all reference to moralities or practices against their religion, creating out of prohibited material a transgressive discourse expressed in what might be termed the "aesthetics of offence". Eagerly supported by politicians, they seek even now to tighten the censorship apparatus, in 2011 banning both A Serbian Movie and Human Centipede 2 as well as editing out "offensive" scenes form numerous non-violent erotic adult movies before allowing them release in Australian adult stores. A century's worth of film censorship and classification practices are exposed in chronological order in the ebook Offensive to a Reasonable Adult. Written by former National Film & Sound Archive SAR Research Fellow Robert Cettl utilizing Australia's only adult industry archive, the Eros Collection, Offensive to a Reasonable Adult is a meticulously researched and comprehensively referenced account of the history of Australian film censorship. As Australia in 2012 seeks to review its classification laws, this is the ebook that puts the entire national film censorship and classification apparatus in complete historical perspective. "Must-reading for anyone interested in the mechanisms and practices of film censorship at national level."
