For Tory, working and living in Los Angeles is the okay of times and the not-so-great of times. Manageable. Tolerable. Acceptable. Barely. That is until an unexpected package appears on her doorstep. Its arrival jolts her out of that comfort zone. Strangers, unpleasant and violent, come hunting for the Package. They make clear to Tory that not giving it to them will have consequences. As one of the interested parties remarks, âI would not undervalue safety. Like so many things in life, it is most desirable when it cannot be found.â The Package though is not all that it appears. Handing it over proves problematic. Then, what is already difficult morphs into being very near to impossible. The sudden dangers threaten the familiar confines of Toryâs job in software development. She discovers at her office, allies, even friends, who were unknown. As she explores the city that becomes stranger and more perilous, she finds someone new, someone very different. An ally? Or perhaps someone with an agenda all his own. With a simple touch and a slight breath, he layers more mystery upon her. As Tory struggles to reveal what the Package is and why so many people desire it, she finds friendship, love, dreams. If only she can survive, her life might just evolve beyond the barely bearable. Packaged by Leslie R. Lee weaves elements of the surreal into every day Los Angeles.

Tory glared at the package, furious. Her toe throbbed with pain. She had pounded her foot into it running out the front door on the way to being just a little late for work. What fool had left it right there? A brick, wrapped in black, shiny paper, gleaming darkly on her doorstep just waiting to kill someone. Much too early for the mail or a special delivery. It looked expensive. Leave it? Take it? She was already juggling a laptop, a briefcase, a sensible lunch, and a purse. No time. Ignoring the curiosity jabbing her mind, she kicked it through the door. It spun with a hiss on the wood floor. She gave it one more look, then slammed the door shut.
Late.
She stumbled into her car and cranked it over. She could already hear her manager screaming his disapproval in silent looks. Why are you late? Again? Didn’t we talk about this? Just because you stayed late last night does not mean you can come in late the next morning. You’re paid to get the job done. Not just to put in hours. Get the job done. That is what you’re here for. That is why we give you our hard earned money. No excuses. The Job. Your Job.
She turned the key again. The computer at work waited for her. The computer in her home waited for her. The laptop on the car seat waited for her. They all waited for her to power them on. Talk to me, they said. Use me. The keys under your fingers, the mouse under your palm, use us to do your bidding.
She sighed. Who was bidding and who was doing?
