Chapter One – Childhood’s End
Jestin fell hard. He crumpled into a tangle of limbs onto the hard gravely path, skinning his palms and elbows and one of his knees. He chewed his lower lip and hid his face as he waited for the initial smart to ebb away. At nineteen, he didn't want to betray that his eyes felt hot with stinging tears. His horse circled him, the reins still looped on her neck. The other riders came to a stop. “Are you alright?” Avria asked breathlessly. He could hear the amusement in her voice, badly hidden in her sincere expression of concern for his well-being. Hanru was less diplomatic and simply laughed;
“What an idiot.” They’d been racing along the deer paths with their horses, letting their mounts negotiate the many obstacles such as fallen logs and gullies on their own. Jestin’s riding skills were not quite up to par with the others, and the course they chose was beyond his capability, resulting in his taking a hard spill.
“Han… stop it,” another male voice muttered with a tone of impatience. That was Drashun, who rode an energetic two-year old that never stopped dancing. The hollow sound of the hoofs beat like musical drums on the hard-packed earth as they waited for Jestin to put himself back together.
“Who doesn’t know how to ride a horse at his age?—any run-of-the-mill city dweller knows how to ride a bloody horse.” Hanru was belligerent in his tone....
